Can Girls Who Wear Glasses Be Hot?

Dorothy Parker once famously said, "Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses." Now, I'm in no expert position to talk about how true or untrue this statement is, but I'd like to reflect on my own journey of glasses and men's passes. And men, we'd love to hear you comment on your own feelings about women and glasses!

I have had bad vision since middle school. I distinctly remember having to get glasses in the 6th grade because I couldn't see the chalkboard from the back of class. At that age, of course I wasn't evolved enough to cherish my own self-esteem, so I avoided wearing glasses at all costs. I would sit in the front row of every class just so I could see, and it worked out actually. I got excellent grades! What I distinctly remember though, was how upset I was over how I looked in the glasses. I felt completely unattractive and nerdy-looking. Which is the worst way for an 11 year old girl to feel.

It probably didn't help that the frames weren't the most attractive ones either. I believe glasses have evolved tremendously since that time. Once I entered high school, I was ecstatic over getting contact lenses, which really started to become popular at that time. Yes, they were a nightmare to put in and take out on a daily basis, but I loved the relief from glasses. In college, I made the leap by getting a pair of amazing Versace glasses frames. I was in LOVE with them. But not to the extent of wanting to wear them on a date.

Senior year of college was when I was fed up with glasses and contacts, and my eyes all together. It's difficult to put on your contacts when you are only getting 3 hours of sleep at a time. I was seriously contemplating lasik eye surgery. Unfortunately, I was not a good candidate for Lasik, as my eyes were still changing. I was forced to accept my relationship with my glasses.

When I first met my boyfriend in college, of course I wore my contacts to every date night. One night though, we stayed up talking until really late in the morning, and I just had to change into my glasses. My eyes were being tortured! Ironically, I find out some years later, that he thought my glasses made me look super hot! Irony of ironies I know.

What's even more ironic is how attractive I find men who wear glasses now.

I guess what's important to recognize here is how behind the times and untrue that Dorothy Parker saying is; at least nowadays. It's nice to think that men have evolved along with our glasses!
